Omofoni inglesi: come impazzire in 5 minuti

L’abbondanza di omofoni nella lingua inglese rappresenta un problema spinoso per lo studente straniero, sia al livello di ortografia che di pronuncia. 

Chi è di madrelingua italiana, essendo abituato a un rapporto regolare (e del tutto logico!) tra il linguaggio scritto e quello parlato, tende a riscontrare maggiore difficoltà con queste parole. 

Oggi, per aiutarvi a imparare il significato, la pronuncia e lo spelling di alcuni omofoni comuni, vi propongo di sentire e leggere alcune frasi particolari (e perciò, spero, più facilmente ricordabili).

1) So you sew while your brothers sow?

Quindi tu cuci mentre tuoi fratelli seminano?

2) Which witch did the guerilla call a gorilla?

Ma quale strega il guerrigliero ha chiamato gorilla?

3) I hear it’shere, the scent I sent.

Mi dicono che è qui il profumo che ho mandato.

4) Wouldyou go to the wood to bury the berry?

Andrei nel bosco per seppellire la bacca.

5) The two mussels have muscles too.

Anche le due cozze hanno I muscoli.

6) Do you know whetherthe weather made the heroine take the heroin?

Ma tu sai se è stato il tempo a indurre l’eroina a prendere l’eroina?

7) It’s wrong to deserta dessert but you can’t eat your sweet in the suite.

È sbagliato abbandonare un dessert ma non è consentito mangiare il dolce nella suite.

8) I’d die if you blew blue dye in my eye.

Morirei se tu mi soffiassi la tintura azzurra nell’occhio.

9) Who’s been eating whose bean salad?

Chi stava mangiando  l’insalata di fagioli di chi?

10) He threwit through the mist but missed the plane on the plain.

L’ha lanciato attraverso la nebbia ma non ha centrato l’aereo sulla pianura.

11) I’m boredwith board games: let’s roam around Rome.

Mi sono scocciato dei giochi da tavolo: andiamo a girovagare per Roma.

12) I knewthe new patients had no patience.

Sapevo che I nuovi pazienti non avevano pazienza.

13) The guest in the inn guessed the key was on the quay.

L’ospite nella locanda ha indovinato che la chiave era sul molo.

14) Checkthe cheque or you’ll get caught out in court.

Controlla l’assegno, se no ti troverai in difficoltà davanti alla tribunale.

15) You should writeabout the right rite and the whole hole.

Dovresti scrivere sul rito giusto e sul buco intero.

16) You can seethe sea, my son in the sun and my heir in the air.

Si vede il mare, mio figlio che prende il sole e il mio erede nell’aria.

17) They’re there by their rows of rose bushes.

Sono lì, vicino alle loro file di rosai.

18) I readthe red mayor led the dead mare to steal steel and lead.

Ho letto che il sindaco di sinistra ha portato la cavalla defunta a rubare acciaio e piombo.

19) The maid made pea soup the colour of pee.

La cameriera ha fatto un zuppa di piselli del colore della pipì.

20) You’ll be weakfor a week until you meet the meat.

Sarai debole per una settimana finché non incontrerai la carne.

21) It’s the taleof a hare with hair and no tail.

È il racconto di una lepre con i capelli e senza la coda.
