Per rispondere alla domanda “Che significa questa parola?”, l’insegnante di inglese si trova spesso costretto a ricorrere alla risposta più scoraggiante in assoluto per uno studente: “It depends!”.

Questo vale soprattutto per la parola get, che non solo cambia significato con una frequenza sconcertante ma a volte non va proprio tradotta. Il suo participio passato got, infatti, quando segue il verbo have (sia con l’accezione di “avere” che con quella di “dovere”) svolge un ruolo puramente rafforzativo e si può anche omettere:

- She has (got) two sisters and a brother.
- I have (got) to finish this job by tomorrow evening.

In altri casi, get si usa soprattutto quando il significato del verbo è – al meno in teoria! – così evidente, grazie al contesto, che lo stesso verbo diventa quasi ridondante. Mettete alla prova la vostra capacità di dedurre il significato dal contesto cercando di collegare a ogni frase uno dei verbi forniti sotto. (Le soluzioni si trovano alla fine dell’articolo.)

Ci sono, naturalmente, molti altri significati di get. Un modo efficace per ricordarli è di collezionarne degli esempi. Questa strategia può risultare particolarmente utile quando si tratta di get come elemento di un cosiddettophrasal verb – get up, get over, get through, ecc. – anche perché in questi casi il contesto non è sempre di grande aiuto.
