Il verbo “fare” crea spesso problemi a chi cerca di tradurlo in inglese. Una strategia a cui si può ricorrere è quella di chiedersi se si tratta di creare qualcosa che non esisterebbe se non venisse fatto (una torta, dei sacrifici, ecc.) o di fare una cosa che esiste a prescindere da se la facciamo o meno (un esame, il dovere, ecc.). Nel primo caso, si tende a usare make (make a cake; make sacrifices; ecc.) mentre nel secondo si preferisce do (do an exam; do your duty; ecc). Per quanto possa essere utile come guida generale, però, questa regola non funziona sempre: tra le molte eccezioni spiccano make the bed (fare il letto), make love (fare l’amore), do someone a favour (fare un favore a qualcuno) e do harm [to someone] (fare male [a qualcuno]). Inoltre, ci sono diversi casi in cui “fare” non si traduce né con make né con do ma con altri verbi. Può quindi convenire adottare l’approccio dei madrelingua e cercare di ricordare i singoli esempi, o almeno quelli più importanti.
